FIRE-IN meeting in Rome: ready for engaging practitioners

What happens if a truck transporting dangerous chemicals collides with a train? A fire starts in a tall building or in a mountainous area? What are the rescue procedures in different countries? What resources are available? How ready are the rescue services? What can we learn from the experiences abroad?

On 18-19 September 2017 civil protection agencies, firefighters and researches from the Horizon 2020 FIRE-IN project met in Rome at the National Fire Academy to refine a methodology for finding gaps and suggesting improvements in the existing Fire & Rescue procedures by engaging the relevant practitioners. The methodology was presented by Isabelle Linde-Frech and Larissa Müller from Fraunhofer INT (Germany) and tried by the participants in a simulated workshop, which allowed them to experience it from the practitioners’ point of view.

CBSS Secretariat’s Jacek Paszkowski and Andriy Martynenko contributed with their experience in stakeholder engagement by moderating the discussions and advising the participants on the techniques of effective workshop organisation.

The participants, FIRE-IN Thematic Group Leaders,  will use the methodology for their own workshops to gather up-to-date information on the existing problems and best practices in Fire & Rescue across Europe. Later this information will be summarised and shared among the practitioners, research and industry through the WEB-based e-FIRE-IN platform.

FIRE-IN project is set to improve national and European Fire & Rescue capability development. FIRE-IN has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme and consists of 16 partners from 8 European countries, representing research, practitioners, governmental agencies and business. Within the next 5 years the project will identify Fire & Rescue practitioners’ requirements and needs to connect them with relevant innovative technologies. The results will be shared among hundreds of experts and professional networks from the whole Europe through an innovative e-FIRE-IN platform.

Learn more about FIRE-IN in a short presentation.
