Final Secure Kids Conference in Riga: Child Participation in Disaster Risk Reduction

28-29 January 2025, Riga & online

The Secure Kids conference brought together over 80 experts, policymakers, practitioners, and children and youth from across the Baltic Sea region to discuss child participation in diastaser risk reduction.

The first day focused on the following themes:
🔹 What is child participation?
🔹 Why is it essential to involve children in DRR?
🔹 How can their voices help build more resilient communities?
🔹 What are the best practices for engaging children in these processes?

Through discussions, group workshops, and national and local examples, we discussed how children’s involvement can strengthen resilience and help create safer, more prepared communities.

The second day of the conference focused on inclusive crisis communication and amplifying children’s voices in disaster risk reduction efforts. Throughout the second day, strategies for engaging children in crises were explored, focusing on effective communication and ensuring their voices are heard. Experts emphasised the importance of inclusivity and accessibility, sharing best practices for raising awareness, creating accessible campaigns, and developing initiatives that prioritise children’s needs, ensuring they are not only seen but truly involved in disaster risk reduction efforts.
